DESCRIPTION:The George Washington distillery at Mount Vernon is holding an outdoor event to sample George Washington’s whiskey and other distilled spirits made at Washington’s Distillery. It is being held Saturdays September from 2-5p. Cost is General Public $60\, Members $50 and you also receive general admission to Mount Vernon on the day of their tasting. \nTickets available here. \nIt’s a pretty cool tour. I posted about the tour and tasting here: George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill Tour and Tasting \nIn 1799\, George Washington’s distillery produced nearly 11\,000 gallons\, making it one of the largest whiskey distilleries in America. \nToday\, a faithfully reconstructed working distillery produces small batch spirits on-site. \nEnjoy a rare opportunity to taste Mount Vernon’s one-of-a-kind distilled spirits. \n\nSample 3 distilled spirits\, made using 18th-century distilling methods and techniques.\nDiscover the history of George Washington’s whiskey from Mount Vernon’s Historic Trades team\, and find out how they distill spirits today.\nTake a tour of the Distillery & Gristmill.\n\nSample 3 Spirits\n\nGeorge Washington’s Rye Whiskey (unaged)\nGeorge Washington’s Straight Rye Whiskey® (aged 2 to 4 years)\nGeorge Washington Straight Rye Premium Whiskey® (aged a minimum of 4 years\, currently up to 6 years)\n\nFor the month of September they are offering 20% off their whiskey. Their bottles are expensive and only come in 375ml. Once you see that this is a super small\, totally hand-made craft operation you will see why they are so expensive. \nThey just released George Washington’s Bourbon Whiskey. It’s their first bourbon\, 7 years\, 93 proof and costs $350. \nEarlier this year they released Commander-in-Chief Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey. At 8 years this is their oldest whiskey do date. It is 110.2 proof and price is 300 for 375ml. While very expensive it is one of the most unique and best ryes I have tasted.

SUMMARY:JAPANESE WHISKY SPOTLIGHT : Tasting + How to Collect Japanese Whisky Today
DESCRIPTION:In our first series of Japanese whisky features at Rice Market\, we focused on specific producers covering the old guard to the pioneering new wave; from Suntory to Chichibu. Those that came for the open house portions would have gotten to sample an assortment of expressions from these producers I’ve pulled from my collection that are not available in the US. For most of the past 10 years\, interesting and compelling Japanese whisky has been fairly difficult to acquire due to numerous factors: increased global demand\, lack of supply\, expensive international shipping. I have had the good fortune to spend a lot of time in Japan in that time\, which has given me access to many of these whiskies\, but many in the US have been out of luck. \nWe are entering a period where many of the new generation of producers have enough mature stock that interesting limited edition expressions are becoming somewhat accessible to consumers worldwide\, if not readily available. It is still more complicated than running to your local liquor store\, but for motivated enthusiasts\, it’s easier than it has been in many years to source interesting Japanese whisky here in the US. \nIn this tasting\, we’ll sample several recent special edition releases from these producers and we’ll discuss how to be plugged into the Japanese whisky market\, what releases to look out for\, and how to actually source these bottles. The tasting will feature: \nMars Le Papillon 2024 Komagatake Triple Cask \nShizuoka Black Adder Bourbon Barrel Single Cask \nChichibu The Whisky Trail 2025 IPA CAsk \nKanosuke Artist Edition #002 2025 Pedro Ximenez Butt \nSaburomaru Chichibu Matsuri 2026 Oloroso Spanish Oak Single Cask \nFollowing the guided tasting\, we will open up to an a la carte bar and I will pull a range of expressions to be available by the dram. As always\, most will be whisky not available in the US (but you can learn how to source them yourself!). \nTicket Price: $100 per person (includes the guided tasting at 6:00-7:00 PM).
